About Our Program Author
Mary Lou Sundberg, author of the Sunform Alphabet System, taught elementary school and special education for thirty years. It was there she became the teacher of a student who could not recall how to draw alphabet symbols or elicit the correct sounds of the alphabet letters through traditional methods of rote memory teaching. Mary Lou’s commitment and persistence to correct this type of challenge lead her back to earn an M.A. from Northwestern University in speech pathology. It was through her focus and determination that Mary Lou designed and created a revolutionary research-based program using unique pictures to transform abstract non-phonetic symbols of the English alphabet into meaningful phonetic letters, laying a solid foundation for beginning reading/writing/spelling.
Mary Lou’s “neurologically integrated” innovation activated both the right and left sides of her student’s brain, simultaneously teaching picture names (not letter names), mnemonic motor movements that eliminate reversals, and alliterations with each letter sound. It worked so well that her student learned the entire alphabet in the following two weeks and, eventually, earned a graduate degree!
Mary Lou was a passionate educator whose lifetime contribution to the field of reading instruction greatly advanced beginning literacy instruction. Thanks to her vision, persistence, and refusal to let long term illness slow her down, it is now possible for every student to rapidly acquire their beginning letter sounds and formulations to automaticity by learning the Sunform Alphabet System. Mary Lou’s work literally unlocked the English alphabet code for every student, and the people who met her will never forget her amazing accomplishment.
